On Dec. 10, 1864, troops of the Right Wing (15th and 17th Corps) of Gen. Sherman´s army (USA) moved up the Savannah and Ogeechee Canal from the Dillon´s Bridge (Fort Argyle) road (Ga 204) and entrenched along the Dean Forest road facing the Confederate batteries on the north bank of salt Creek. This point on the Canal was within artillery range of the Pine Point battery (CSA), which restricted daylight travel. From the 12th to the 21st, Leggett´s division, 17th Corps (USA), held the line from this point on the canal south along the Dean Forest road to Darien road (US 17).
